for the Week 10-07-2000 The Human Brain The Brain is the most powerful instrument in the human body. The brain has been held responsible for various discoveries, achievements and great work. When the brain malfunctions tragic and disastrous effects follow. The brain is protected by the bones of the skull. It makes up 2 to 3% of the body's weight. But it consumes more than 20% of the energy produced. Oxygen is very important for the brain to function properly. If there is no oxygen the brain cells will die within a few minutes. The brain has billions of neuron (nerve cells). After birth no new neurons are created. Since no neurons are created after birth, the increase in weight is accounted for by the increase in size of neurons and in the number of connections they make. Damaged neurons can repair themselves to some extent, but dead neurons cannot be replaced. The more you use your brain the more effective it will become. The Brain comprises of 1. Cerebellum Each has its own function. Brain has two hemispheres a) The Left Hemisphere Corpus Callosum links the two hemisphere of the brain which is a mass of nearly 2 million nerve fibres. Your nervous system controls the actions and sensations of all the parts of your body as well as your thoughts, emotions and memories. It is collecting information from inside and outside your body. Your nervous system is performing different tasks all in a split second and with great efficiency. Dr. Rofer Sperry found that each half of the brain has a seperate train of conscious thought and its own memories. The two sides of the brain think in different ways. While the left brain tends to think in words, the right brain thinks directly in Sensory Images. To much stress affects the Hypothalamus which in due course, the person starts loosing memory. Since stress elevates memory you have to empower your brain against negative thoughts, worry, anxiety and fear.
